The NATS Strategic Plan 2020-25: Framing Our Future is a living document with goals and objectives that, when accomplished, benefit members and our profession. With this strategic plan we offer an update to our mission and add to it NATS' vision, values, and a diversity and inclusion statement. If you haven't already, please click here to donate to the NATS Framing Our Future Fund.
NATS Diversity and Inclusion Statement
NATS now has a diversity and inclusion statement that was crafted by members of national leadership, the executive director and the national board. It reads, in part: “NATS strives to be a welcoming and supportive community of members and students who celebrate the unique identities, varied backgrounds, and experiences of all individuals. We are dedicated to ensuring that all voices are valued and heard in an inclusive environment with equitable treatment for all.” For a complete copy of the new statement and accompanying toolkit, click on the following link: NATS Diversity & Inclusion Toolkit.
YEAR OF WOMEN COMPOSERS
The NATS Advocacy Committee, with the support of the NSA Committee and NATS leadership, is supporting an endeavor to promote diversity in repertoire selection by choosing a different theme biennially. Our first initiative will be vocal music by women composers. We want to encourage the membership to program music by women for the upcoming competition and recital seasons. Our goal is to advance the repertoire of these composers by strong suggestion rather than by requirement. To that end we offer resources on the NATS website: https://www.nats.org/Women_Composers_Initiative.html
The national conference is in July and SERNATS will be well-represented! Many of our SERNATS colleagues are participating in panel discussions, giving presentations, and performing. There are twenty students from our region who have advanced to the national semifinals! AND…..our own Dr. Alexis Davis-Hazell will be installed as the next president-elect of NATS! CONGRATULATIONS to our own SERNATS colleague and regional secretary, Dr. Alexis Davis-Hazell, who was recently elected to NATS leadership and will begin her term as President-Elect this summer!!
American mezzo-soprano Alexis Davis-Hazell is a clinician, presenter and singing actor of opera, concert and musical theatre repertoire in the Southeast United States. Her performances have earned accolades for the size and quality of her instrument, and the dramatic intensity she brings to supporting characters. Among the highlights of her singing career are the more than one hundred and thirty performances of The Gershwins’ masterwork Porgy and Bess in numerous productions, including those produced on the eight-show per week musical theater-touring model. She gained an invaluable cultural and professional education singing the roles of Maria, Lily and Strawberry Woman as a principal and ensemble swing in opera houses throughout Germany, Russia, Poland, Greece, Latvia, Switzerland and North America.
