For Teachers
Emerging Leaders
Designed to recognize and support NATS teachers with no more than ten years of teaching experience, this grant will help selected winners attend sessions, network with colleagues, and enjoy all the benefits available at the NATS Conference. Winners will receive up to $750 to pay for expenses for travel, housing, registration, food, and other related costs for attendance at the next NATS National Conference.
GA-NATS Teacher Enrichment Program
The Teacher Enrichment Program offers Georgia NATS members an opportunity to strengthen their studio pedagogy by observing and being observed by a Georgia NATS mentor teacher over a period of one academic semester (August-December or January-May). This program is open to any active Georgia NATS member, whether a new teacher looking to solidify her/his studio pedagogy or an experienced teacher looking to re-energize or diversify her/his teaching.
Independent Voices
NATS gives special emphasis toward advancing the work of our independent studio teachers, who comprise more than half of the NATS family of members. A key resource for studio voice professionals are the “Independent Voices” articles, which appear in the semi-annual Inter Nos e-newsletter. We invite you to read our recent articles, offering practical solutions for non-university, independent studios and inspiring success stories of our entrepreneurial members.
Joan Frey Boytim Awards for Independent Teachers
In summer 2015, the NATS Foundation announced a new opportunity for independent teachers. Thanks to a significant gift from Joan Frey Boytim, the Foundation will be awarding $1,000 to one NATS member from each of the 14 NATS regions to attend the NATS National Conferences. It is designed to recognize and support independent teachers who do not hold full or part-time teaching positions in a college or university. Up to FOURTEEN fellowships will be awarded.
NATS Intern Program
The NATS Intern Program is an exceptional training experience that seeks to pair expert and recognized master teachers with talented early career members of NATS. Within an intensive format designed to promote the dynamic exchange of ideas and techniques, the goal is to improve substantially the studio teaching skills of voice interns and the coaching skills of collaborative piano interns. Independent studio teachers are strongly urged to apply. NATS and the NATS Foundation provide tuition, housing, and meals. Interns are responsible for their travel expenses, though they may request financial assistance from their NATS chapters or regions as well as from their institutions of employment.
National Workshops
Driven by its mission to offer a variety of lifelong learning experiences, the National Association of Teachers of Singing holds workshops twice per year (winter and summer) in non-conference years and once per year (winter) when a conference is scheduled. Every NATS workshop is programmed around themes that are highly relevant to the voice teaching and performing professions. A Mentored Teaching Experience has been incorporated with our Summer Workshops to provide feedback for mid-career and other teachers. Summer workshops also feature the semifinal and final rounds of our National Student Auditions. Winter workshops are held in conjunction with the semifinal and final rounds of the NATS Artist Awards and National Music Theater Competition.
Van L. Lawrence Fellowship
The Van L. Lawrence Fellowship was created to honor Van L. Lawrence, M.D. for his outstanding contribution to voice, and particularly to recognize the importance of the interdisciplinary education he fostered among laryngologists and singing teachers. It is awarded jointly by The Voice Foundation and National Association of Teachers of Singing Foundation. The Fellowship winner will be provided with the opportunity to attend the annual Symposium on Care of the Professional Voice and visit laryngologists, speech pathologists, voice scientists, and research centers associated with The Voice Foundation during the fellowship year, with resulting research to be considered for expedited publication in the Journal of Voice or Journal of Singing. If you have any questions, please contact The Voice Foundation office.
Voice Pedagogy Award
The NATS Foundation awards one $500 gift annually to a candidate who is a member of NATS, for the purpose of study at a seminar or workshop on voice pedagogy and/or voice science. Candidates must submit a request for funds to the President of the NATS Foundation not later than February 15 of the year in which the seminar will take place.
